PARAPALOOZA - Day 1

Southern Witch series - Quote of the Day:

"I'd never kill anyone with hair that fabulous."
~ Rollie the vampire

* * *

Gerry Bartlett writes a terrific humorous paranormal series featuring a beautiful full-figured vampire. Here's what Gerry has to say about becoming one of the undead herself...

Since you write about vampires, if you had the choice, would you want to be one?

"Lots to consider here. First, my heroine, Glory St. Clair, was turned when she had a few extra pounds to lose and then she was stuck like that. So first, I’d have to diet down to a perfect weight. And that’s obviously not going to happen. I have the self-control of a mosquito in a nudist colony. Then there’s the whole liquid diet thing. Sorry, but I love my food too much to give it up. What fun is it to live forever without steak and a baked potato? Not to mention chocolate truffles. I have to have crunch in my diet too, just like my heroine. She suffers just to taste the occasional Cheeto.

On the serious side, the immortality thing is a big deal. If I were given the option, I wouldn’t want to be turned vampire. No way. Not unless everyone I know and loved would live forever too. I can’t imagine watching them die while I lived on. There could be nothing worse.

Hey, this is getting way too gloomy now. In REAL VAMPIRES HATE THEIR THIGHS, coming in February, Glory has her pick between two hot guys. Now that’s what I’m talking about. I write fiction, folks. And there’s nothing more fun than escaping into a book where all your dreams can come true. So, sure, I’d live and look young forever. I’d have hot guys at my feet and elsewhere, if you get my drift. And figure out a way to eat too. If I’m writing this story, then I can make it happen. Right?" ~ Gerry Bartlett

Hee Hee Hee. Yeah, there's a reason I love Gerry & Glory. Now if you'd like to win a signed copy of Barely Bewitched from the Southern Witch series (and Book 1 Would-Be Witch, if you don't have it) and an autographed copy of the first book in Gerry's series (Real Vampires Have Curves), please pop into the comments and tell us whether you'd like to be a vampire or not.

P.S. If you'd like to visit Gerry's site, you can find her at www.GerryBartlett.com

I don't think I'd like to be a vampire, no. I love the way things smell (no breath would make that a very dull sense, at the least); I love the sunlight, and - as the author mentions - watching everyone I care about grow old and die while I didn't? Egad, no.

But perhaps for a short time, it would be fun. At least as long as I could find my old high school gym teacher and drop by for a visit...

In the traditional sense, no - I really would not wish to be a vampire. Yet - aren't we all 'vampires' in one sense or another? We live by taking in the energy of other lifeforms, we out live our beloved pets, and sadly, our loved ones on occasion. Yes, we may stand in the sunlight as well as moonlight, but what a fine line separates the two.

On the other hand, what good could perhaps be accomplished by a true 'vampire' - someone who could live eons untold, and amass a wealth of knowledge, experience and the monetary means to put so much learning in place. I think it would take a very unselfish soul - in this particular sense - to 'sacrifice' themselves to immortality in order that they might serve a larger purpose.

LOL - deep thinking so early in the morning is not my cup o tea!

PS - I absolutely LOVED Would Be Witch, cannot wait to get the next book :)

While certain things about being a vampire sound appealing, in the end I think I would say no thanks. It's hard enough saving for retirement now...how would you ever save enough for eternity??? *L*
Laurie Powers said…
Not really, but I guess it would depend on which "vampire" you would become. Each author has their own ideas on what a vampire is and what their symptoms are. Some aren't as bad as others. But unless my family and the person I love were also vampires the life really isn't for me.

I so would love it, besides the grusome blood thing, I would love to live for eons, think of the experiences. And I would have to bite my honey so he could be one to ;-))

I would like to be a vampire, I'd just want to choose who's world I'd live in. Some can survive daylight, churches, and synthetic blood. I'd like to be one of those.

Vampire...there are benefits - like the whole 'no sleeping' thing. Plenty of time to explore hobbies. Still, I think I'm fond of being a human - and there's the whole icky blood-drinking thing! lol.

I think I would like to be vampire. To be able to see what how the world would change as time passed.

But like most people, it would suck (no pun intended) to see my love ones died yet I continue on living.

What it comes down to it, it would all depend on what kind of a vampire I would be. Certainly would love to be one that wouldn't be restricted by daylight.

Okay, I absolutely love your Would-Be Witch and can't wait to get my hands on Barely Bewitched.

And Speaking of vampires, I love Gerry's Vamp series as well. Can't wait to read her next book!

Thanks Kimberly for creating PARPALOOZA Fest 2009. Maybe you can do this next time on the release of your next book? (hint!) ;)

Hmm..That's a tough question. I'm not sure I would want to be immortal and watch so much suffering that humanity goes through. Too heartbreaking. And to outlive those you love deeply, especially children. Ugh.

However, there is that romanticized appeal. I'd have to be ungodly rich, young, vivacious, be able to soak in the sun, frolick in the sea...oh, you know, LIVE.

Besides the blood thing, I'd like to be a vampire..I'd adjust. I'm a night person anyways.

I'd hate to be a vampire--the blood thing--but mostly because of living forever.

Do vampires have to diet and exercise? If not,I might be more interested.

I couldn't be a vampire - - I love the sun and I cannot stand the thought of drinking blood and killing something to get it! Yikes! However, I do like how "badass" mainstream vampires have gotten - - and their super abilities would be cool to have, at least for a short while.
Thanks for entering me in this contest. What a great giveaway!

I don't think I would like to be a vampire. I would not like seeing my loved ones grow old and die while I stayed the same.

I have not read the Southern Witch series - but I have it on my wish list. :)

I have read the first 3 books in Glory's series and I've enjoyed each one.

Thank you for the wonderful giveaway.

Hi Kimerly!
first at all - congrats for your new book! It sounds fantastic...

That's a difficult question... immortality and boundless possibilities versus a mortal life? *lol*
Honestly, I would like to meet a real vampire before I judge... like Laurie said, there are a lot of different vampires and my decisions belongs to them.

Like vampire (or Highlander) I wouldn't want to outlive friends/family. Being a were wouldn't be bad (slow aging process, paranormal powers) or having a witch's powers (in Charmed I always wanted Paige's powers) but there is too much you have to give up for all that you get to be a vamp.

Honestly, no, I like the day, I don't wanna look all pale. I like food, and I would not want to live forever.
It depends.. there are so many different takes on vampire lore, so while I might want to be one kind, not sure I'd like the other. Hmm.. I think if I could choose, I'd be a half vampire, half human, like Cat in Jeaniene Frost's Night Huntress series. Especially if that means I could find my very own Bones to snuggle and... do other things with!

Haha, thanks!

As long as I lost a few pounds first, vampirism wouldn't be too bad. As long as I wasn't a mopey, woe-is-me vampire it would be kind of fun. Scaring kids on Halloween. Vanquishing enemies. Perfect skin. If there were coffee-flavored blood, it would be heaven!

Gerry's post was hilarious. I loved it. But to answer your question - No, I'll pass. I'm with the others on the blood thing. I couldn't handle that. I have enough trouble in human form. LOL

No vampirism for me. I like the sun too much. And what happens if you get a cavity in your fang? I hate the dentist even now, I can't imagine that changing when I have to rely on my teeth to survive!
Yes!! LOL, I sometimes think I am...I'm VERY nocturnal, oh so pale, and anemic my whole life, and I FRY when I'm out in the sun, lol. I jokingly tell my daughter I just know I'm a vampire and no one has figured it out yet!!
Unknown said…
It depends on what vampires there are.

The old Nosferatu ones?
Surely not.

Anne Rice impotent?
Nah. Too depressing.

But there are some vampire kinds of the more humorous writers I pretty like.

I would prefer being a bottle-kid, but I could live with blood sucking because I would hunt down evil does.
I always wanted to be a superhereo, if I was a vampire I could surely turn good.

However there are mentioned downsides... I love cooking. Okay I could probably be happy with cooking for others, but the weight issue... well :/
I don't want to be stuck like that for eternity and I would like to have at least on immortal partner

Else it's no fun:(

So if I ever would turn vampire I would surely do good for the world.
But if I was offered if I wanted to be or not I would have a hard time and probably say not if these aren't very cool, modern vampires.

No, the vampire lifestyle is not for me. I am too much of a morning person. I would be friends with a vampire, though I wouldn't want to be the buffet.

I do love a good read and Would Be Witch hit the spot, I can't wait to read the next one!
Since I'm pretty much a night owl anyway I wouldn't mind being a vampire to some degree. I'd be able to sleep all day, and my husband couldn't wait me up in the morning (he's a morning person, yuk!) Then I think of the cons, I'd be stuck the way I am which is something I don't want, no more food *cries* and I wouldn't be able to see my family. Being a vampire is nice to think about sometimes but I think I'll just stay the way I am, lol.

I think I'd have to give being a vampire a pass. Maybe I've just seen Highlander too many times but the idea of outliving everyone I care about seems like it would take all the fun out of it. Not to mention the blood drinking, I love food, why would I want to give that up for the ultimate liquid diet?

Don't get me wrong, I'd be alright with some awesome powers and stuff, but vampirism just has too many negatives to make it my go to choice.

Now if the question was "Would you like to be a werewolf?" Well that would be a whole different deal.

I'd like to be a vampire only in the sense that there is so much that I hope to do before I leave this earth. So many places to see, so many books to read, movies to watch. And new ones are made every year!

I don't really like the idea of the blood drinking or the liquid diet because I too love food. (Although all the great sex doesn't sound bad. hehe!)

I wouldn't mind the vampire super powers because doesn't everyone want to be a super hero at some point in their lives. I guess the real issue then is living forever and I am really unsure about that.

All and all I am up in the air about the whole thing, but realistically I have to say no. Although I wouldn't mind dating a vampire. J/k!

Good question, very hard to answer. In a short-term sense, the advantages of being a vampire would be pretty awesome. You'd get the supernatural speed and strength and you'd be difficult to kill. I guess it also depends on which vampire version we're talking about. Everyone has a different version of a vampire these days. But every single one of them have one thing in common: they live a very long time. I don't think I could stand doing that. It'd be a very lonely existence. So ultimately no, I wouldn't want to be a vamp.

Oh he's going to annoy me forever, no changing those facts. lol I love the silly man, but I love reading too. It's a complete toss up hehee!

I'd Love to Be a Vampire. I think it would be fun. But which vampire is the question. I love J.R. Ward's vampire the most. I wish I could just jump inside and be a vampire in her book.

Congratulations! Thanks for a fabulous giveaway! If I had a tall, dark, drop-dead gorgeous vampire mate for all eternity, I just might consider the vampire life! gcwhiskas at aol dot com

Thats a tricky question but I think it would be cool if I could still have friends and family. If I could not be grossed out by blood then maybe it would be ok.

I'd love to be a vampire. Just think, an eternity to read anything and everything. I could put up with drinking blood for that!

To be...dead; Or not to be... dead. That is the question. Oops, where did Shakespeare come from? Well, I guess there's always room for him to slip in.

Okay, so I'm trying to decide now if I would "go vamp" or not, and I've been looking over everything you guys have said.

On the one hand:
- super strength
- super speed
- perfect skin
- no need to exercise
- can get even with evil-doers (like murderers or former gym teachers)
- might find eternal love with eternally gorgeous guy
- will have eternity to read books
- don't have to get up early

On the other hand:
- might get a cavity in a fang and have to go to dentist (though in one of Kerrelyn's Sparks's books a problem with his fang is how the hero meets his love)
- have to drink blood
- have to give up food
- have to give up coffee
- might not have enough in retirement fund to cover expenses for eternity. (Can vamps claim social security?)
- no sunshine (do spray tans work on vampires?)
- loved ones die (unless they get turned too)
- pets die (unless they can be turned. Vampire pets? The humane society would so be coming after us I think.)

My list is almost balanced. I'm going to have to keep thinking...

No, I don't think being a vampire would be too much fun. I'd rather be a human!

No, I wouldn't want to be a vampire - or work in the medical field for that matter. It's a little thing I have about seeing blood! However, it sure would help with time management issues since I would have 24/7 to get work done and fit in fun (vampire fun, I guess:)without the need for sleeping.

i guess if i could be one i would be, just so long as someone else decided for me.(change me without asking first) you would be amazed at what you can or will live with beside that think of what you could do! change the world would no longer be just a catch phrase.

P.S. By the way, Parpalooza -Day 1 happens to also be my birthday! Barely Bewitched would definately be an awesome present!

Like Gerry, I don't think I could handle watching all those I love die before me. So, as much as I like reading about them, I'll pass on becoming a vampire.

Thanks, but I do believe I shall
have to decline! If I was meant
to be a vampire, that is how I
would have arrived on this earth.
I would also have been slender,
gorgeous, tall and had curly hair! Alas, it was not to be!!

I'd love to be a vampire, and I guess I'd just have to find new friends and make new family when the old ones died out :o) I think it'd be fun to just have time to do any little thing that struck my fancy and I'm a total night owl, so the whole not seeing daylight wouldn't bother me too much.
I would love to be a vampire.. hands down! To be ultra sexy... and live for as long as you can... And to be able to change into mist... and other things... And to have Eric from Sookie's series ~ damn!
But then I would also love to be a shape-shifter too... The endless possibilities!!!

Please throw my name in the hat for a chance at winning!!!

Ok. This is my third attempt to get this bloggery posted...I'm impaired.

Here's what I think about being a vampire: they seem to have super tasty sex! Now, that can't be bad!

If you could also maintain an intact soul, drink coffee, and include friends and family in your fabulous fang-y life, why not? I would have to go for plant-based or synthetic blood, though, except for special friends...

It's not all gloom & doom people! Of course I'd love to be a vampire.
I'm already nocturnal, love the night. I can turn family & friends. Go anywhere in the world, just think about how many libraries & book stores I can visit for an eternity. Woo-Hoo!!!
I can be around for the Kindle 3,000,000 DX or whatever they invent next.

I would love to be a vampire. Not only does the blood thing work for me,but being a vampire would be an excellent excuse for my quirkiness. And I would finally have an excuse to be an "night person."

I think the only good thing about being a vampire, for me, is that I could wear old-fashioned clothes like Lestat.

I watched Interview recently, and I love that bit at the end where he adjusts the lace cuff of his sleeve.

Becoming a vampire would be a hard decision... it would be very difficult to watch my children die one by one, however you really never know what may happen so if the chance to become one came around it would be hard to turn down. I guess it depends on a lot of what if's... but hey that is anything in life. If I new the future I would be a millionaire..7, 10, 12, 24,.... hehe :)

WOW! WITH SO MANY COMMENTS I STAND NO CHANCE OF WINNING BUT I'D BE INTERESTED IF I COULD GET A NEWSLETTER OR MAIL LIST? I JUST ADORE VAMPS!

It would take some adapting and changing but life is all about change. As with all life changes, there are the good and the bad. I believe a positive attitude helps. I love working at night so that part would not be hard for me. But giveing up coffee might be my downfall.

I do not think that I would like to a vampire because I could not bear to see my family grow old and pass away while I stayed the same. I can only imagine the loneliness.

Although, I really love reading about vampires!!

What an awesome response! For all you vamp wannabes and don't wannabes, thanks! Kimber, your contest is a hit! Hope the winner enjoys the prize. As for a vamp pet? Well, how about a shapeshifter to cuddle up with. My Glory had her dog Valdez. Of course now he's gone all too human and ready to more than friends. Oh, you didnt know? Guess you'll have to stay tuned.
